How to use a step ladder safely?

When using a step ladder it’s important to use it safely. You can do this by:

  • Ensuring all four step ladder feet are firmly on the floor to avoid unsteadiness and tipping.
  • Only carry light items.
  • Don’t try to reach items you can’t get easily.
  • Don’t work on the top three steps, unless there’s a suitable handrail.
  • Make sure any safety or locking devices are firmly in place.
  • Try to position the ladder facing where you’re trying to reach rather than side on, where possible.
  • Maintain three points of contact (two feet and one hand) when working on the step ladder.

How to carry a step ladder safely

  • Always carry your ladder in the closed position. This makes it easier to carry and avoid accidents like your fingers getting trapped.
  • When carrying a step ladder you must ensure you have good balance. You should do this by gripping the middle section of the side rail to help evenly distribute the weight of the ladder.

  • Collapse the ladder – Hold the top of the ladder with one hand and and lift the bottom rung to release the mechanism and easily collapse the ladder.
  • Store the ladder – Before storing the ladder you should ensure the locking mechanism is in the closed position.
